What the Library Can Do For

You & Your Students!

Text Box: What the Library Can Do For You & Your Students!

TEACHER TOOLS @ THE LIBRARY!

Without advance notice, the library has a difficult time insuring your students will have access to the material they need to complete assignments.  In order for the library to better assist students with research projects, teachers are asked to submit an Assignment Alert Form to notify library staff of special assignments and  projects.  Teachers may also place materials of special interest on Temporary  Reserve Status.  By filling out a Temporary Reserve Form, teachers select specific books and material for students to use in-house only.  These items will not circulate until the assignment is completed.  Assignment Alert Forms and Temporary Reserve Forms may be submitted online, faxed or sent through the mail.  Please be aware of what material is available, as the library may not have a particular item of interest.  Although books can be borrowed from other libraries, Inter-library loan requests are subject to strict limits and take an average of two weeks to fill.  The library catalog may be accessed online at www.friendswood.lib.tx.us.

For your convenience, online forms are available at the library’s web site on the Reference Services page & the Teachers’ & Parents Resources page.

 HOMEWORK HELPERS!

The Library’s Kids Page offers a great   resource for on-line homework help.  As library staff becomes aware of assignments, useful and reliable Web Sites are listed online at the FPL Homework Helper page to better assist students.  Parents and teachers will also find links to FISD Homework Assignments listed at schoolnotes.com, as well as links to other useful sites.

FISD TEXTBOOKS!

Each year, FISD loans the library textbooks for the current year.  These textbooks are non-circulating items and can be used only in the library.  FISD textbooks are located in the Children’s Department.

FIELD TRIPS TO THE LIBRARY!

Class and group visits to the library are one way that schools and libraries can cooperate to improve students’ educational experience.  During a library visit, students are given an orientation to the library, which may include a tour, a lesson in library etiquette and skills, book talks, an introduction to specific resources and special assistance with assignments.  Library visits should be scheduled in advance.  Suggested guidelines are as follows:

·      Please schedule your class or group visit at least one week in advance by contacting the Children’s Department at 281-482-7135.

·      Please notify the library as to special needs, length of visit and teacher expectations.

·      The teacher is responsible for providing a reasonable degree of adult supervision during the visit.

INTERNET ACCESS FOR CLASSES!

The library has eight computers in the Reference Department that classes can use during visits.  Both parents and teachers should be aware that these computers are not filtered.  Whether or not students will be allowed to use the Internet during a class visit is up to the teacher.  Remember that regular patrons will also be using the computers, so availability may be limited.  Teachers who wish to use the Internet during class visits may request use of our portable laptop computer lab.  The lab consists of eight laptops that can be set up in the Activity room or small conference room for your students' convenience.

LIBRARY DATABASES!

The library has access to a wide variety of databases that may be accessed both in the library and from home.  The TEXSHARE database provides databases that will assist children with homework for grades K-12 and beyond.  Many of these databases provide full text articles, pamphlets, and books.  Databases of special interest to teachers, parents and students are:  MasterFILE Premier (popular magazines), EBSCO Animals (in-depth animal information), Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, MAS Ultra School Edition (current events), Middle Search Plus (provides Lexile reading levels), Primary Search (elementary school level) & Searchasaurus (kid-friendly).  Also provided are the Handbook of Texas, the Texas Almanac, the World Almanac & Literature Resource Center.

NOTE: due to licensing agreements, please do not use the TEXSHARE database in your classroom.
